CHAPTER 15

“Hi, Kelly, think you got room in here for me?” a familiar voice said a few minutes later.

She turned around and saw Pete, Roxie’s brother. Pete had been a huge help to Kelly when Mike had a bad case of the flu and solving a murder that occurred at a truck stop outside of Cedar Bay had pretty much fallen on her shoulders. Several of the truckers had worked for Pete, and she and Pete had developed a mutually respected friendship.

“Are you kidding, Pete? Can you imagine what Roxie would do to me if I didn’t find a place for her brother? As important as your sister is to this establishment, if something happened to her, I might as well close the doors. It’s my personal opinion, pretty much based on fact, that most of the customers who come in here on any given day do so because of Roxie’s warmth and her great smile. The first time they meet her, they know they have a friend for life.”

“Yeah, trust me, it wasn’t easy being in her shadow when we were growing up. I tend to appraise people for a while before I want to let them into my world. Obviously, that way of making friends is quite the opposite of hers, so guess who had more friends growing up? Bingo, you’re right,” he said with a laugh as he formed a gun out of his fingers and pointed it at Kelly.

Kelly laughed as well. “Follow me, Pete. I can see a bunch more people coming in, and I want to make sure you have a booth.”

He sat down at the indicated booth and Kelly handed him a menu. “I’m only telling my favorite people this, Pete, but you better order the salmon. It’s a special today, and there is a very limited supply. With this lunch crowd, I expect it won’t be available for very much longer. I see Roxie coming over, so make sure she takes your order to Charlie right away. Talk to you later.”

She started to walk away, but Pete put a hand on her arm. “Kelly, I didn’t come here just for lunch. When you get a moment, I need to talk to you.”

She started to make a smart comeback, then looked down at his serious expression and said, “Pete is everything alright?”

“With me, yes, but I saw something the night Greg Tuttle died that I think your husband needs to know about. I’ve never met your husband, so I thought I’d see if maybe you’d be the messenger. I heard he was very close to Tuttle, and I’m sure he’s probably doing some grieving of his own.”

“He is, but he’s also the trustee of Greg’s trust, so that’s taking precedence right now. Plus, Greg died in a boating accident in a bay that’s in Mike’s jurisdiction. He also has to try and determine how Greg fell out of the boat. You know, due diligence and all of that.”

“Yes, I understand. I’ll wait here until you have a minute.
